LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira Saturday said that the government would take steps in the light of the verdict ofSupreme Court regarding 37 Ordinances passed after imposition of emergency in the country by Pervez Musharraf.Addressing " Meet the Press" programme at Lahore Press Club, he said that PPP had always struggled against dictatorship and the SC's judgment would play an important role for strengthening democracy in the country.To a question, the minister said that there was no military operation in Balochistan adding security forces were only taking action against the criminals carrying out anti-state activities in the area." Some criminal elements are involved in damaging public installations, violence and target killings in the area," he added.He said the government was committed to resolve the Balochistan issue and a cabinet committee was working on it." The government believes in provincial autonomy and Balochistan issue will be settled soon," Kaira maintained.Responding to a question about abolishing of Islamabad High Court, the minister said that judiciary better knows its matters.National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was introduced before imposition of emergency in the country, he said while responding to another question.To a question about refusal of Asian Development Bank and World Bank to provide financial assistance for Bhasha Dam project, he said the work on Bhasha Dam project would start soon and it was not a controversial project." Bhasha Dam will benefit the people of the Northern Areas also," he said adding the government has allocated a hefty amount for this project and total about Rs 11 billion would be spent on it within seven to eight years.Responding to another question about the closure of Chashma Power Plant, the minister said that it was closed due to annual maintenance and repair.He said that government was introducing short and long term policies to overcome power shortage in the country and added the Prime Minister has constituted a 6-membercabinet committee to resolve the issue of load-shedding in the country." We are meeting with Wapda and Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC)'s men for this purpose," he added.To a question about action against Pervez Musharraf underArticle-6, Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the parliament had already completed its job on this matter." The government will take further decision in this regard after the detailed judgment of the SC,' he added.The minister urged the media to play its role for developing public support against terrorism and extremists in the country." Press has always played pivotal role for the restoration of democracy in the country," he added.He said the government was launching a Journalist Training Programme in all big cities of the country to train the community." This programme will enable the journalists community to perform duties effectively and actively," he added.He said the government has allocated Rs 980 million to provide financial assistance to journalists who were sacked from the service by the owners.A summary has been forwarded to the Prime Minister for establishing a Journalist Victim Fund, he added.On the demand of Group Insurance of members of LPC, the minister assured that the government would consider this proposal.He condemned the incident of torturing journalists by the lawyers while performing their duties.Later, Qamar Zaman Kaira presented a cheque of Rs onemillion to President Lahore Press Club Sarmad Bashir.
